LYRASIS is looking for a collaborative application developer to participate in the day-to-day maintenance, ongoing development, and community activities of the open-source Fedora application.

Fedora is a digital preservation-focused repository platform for managing and disseminating digital content. Fedora relies on Java primarily and other systems, such as relational databases. Fedora is stable, has just finished a major release, and is primarily in an adoption/maintenance phase. The program is supported by an active community of Fedora users, including code committers and technologists from multiple partner organizations. The ideal candidate will be excited at the opportunity to dive into this field and learn more about the software and the community it serves

This is a remote, part-time position (approximately 20 hours per week) with the potential to grow into a full-time role.

Duties/Job Responsibilities:

Initial expectations for the successful candidate will focus on maintenance and support of the system with the possibility for further feature-based development in the future. The person in this position:

  • designs, implements, tests, and supports the Fedora application
  • works with community partners to address their business needs while coordinating with other community developers, the program manager, subject matter experts, and stakeholders
  • coordinates software quality assurance and technical documentation for major releases
  • provides technical support to users, troubleshooting problems, and maintaining code

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 2 years with an OO based language such as Java (or a combination of related education and experience)
  • Knowledge of database programming, especially open source (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Familiarity with working collaboratively and communicating effectively with stakeholders
  • Experience working with a cross-functional team to plan and complete technical projects
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git/Github)
  • Understanding of standard web specifications (REST, HTTP), incident, problem, change, and release management practices
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including producing technical documentation
  • Ability to troubleshoot application, database, network, and operating system-related issues
  • Ability to work independently and excel in time management, organization, and prioritization

Preferred Qualifications

  • agile development methodologies
  • search and indexing platforms such as Apache Solr or ElasticSearch
  • server-side web development using Java and JEE technologies, Ruby, and/or Python
  • test-driven development and/or continuous integration
  • cloud-deployment
  • containerized development (e.g., Docker)
  • application and web service development for museums, libraries, archives, or digital collections
  • Interest in participating in user-facing events such as demos, training videos, and/or community meetings

The position is part of a geographically and institutionally distributed team, and, as such, applications from candidates interested in telecommuting are welcome. North American time zones preferred
